The Robert Downey Jr-led superhero blockbuster earned £6.3 million to hold off competition from new college comedy 21 & Over.
Olympus Has Fallen, last week's chart runner-up, slipped down to number three with £672,755. Family film All Stars debuts at four, while the Tom Cruise sci-fi Oblivion completes the top five.
Elsewhere, the chart also sees new entries from Pedro Almodóvar's I'm So Excited at number seven and Dead Man Down at eight.
