The 50-year-old insisted that Wahlberg is a "really lovely guy" who simply overindulged on a February edition of The Graham Norton Show also featuring Sarah Silverman and Michael Fassbender.
"I think the three of us had met a lot of drunk people over the years," Norton said. "Mark Wahlberg's been on the show before and he's a really lovely guy.
"We've all done that thing where you suddenly realise, 'I'm by far the drunkest person at this dinner party' and you don't know how that happened. It was a bit like that, so I don't judge him harshly at all. It was just a thing.
Norton went on to praise recent guest Tom Cruise for his down-to-earth attitude, commenting that if half the rumours about him are true then the star had put on "an incredibly good act".
"Tom Cruise, it's still pretty impressive that he shows up," he said. "Everyone wants him to be horrible or weird and he's just not.
"If it's an act, it's an incredibly good act and I wish all our guests were Scientologists, because he's just brilliant."
Norton also named George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as his dream guests.
Norton is hosting this year's BAFTA Television Awards, which will take place at London's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, May 12. The ceremony will be broadcast on BBC One from 8pm
