Andrew Garfield and Ken Watanabe are to star in Martin Scorsese's Silence.
The director has long worked to bring the Shusaku Endo novel to the big screen, and Variety reports that he has finally received the necessary financing from Emmett/Furla Films
Garfield has been cast in the role of Father Rodrigues in the story of Jesuits attempting to spread Christianity in 17th century Japan.
Daniel Day-Lewis was in talks to star in Silence in 2009, but a deal was never reached.
Silence is expected to begin production in Taiwan in July 2014. Scorsese and Jay Cocks have penned the screenplay.
Scorsese is currently prepping the release of The Wolf of Wall Street, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a stockbroker caught in the middle of corporate corruption and mafia intervention.
The Wolf of Wall Street is expected to be released in November.
